2% Commitment

What does God want?
So now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? Only to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD your God and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being. - Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Today's reading is a simple set of instructions for a godly life. Love and serve God with all your heart and soul, and keep his commandments.
That sounds simple, but it really isn't. It's hard to be ever focused on doing the work God has for us to do.
Consider this. There are 168 hours in the week, and if we get 7 hours of sleep each day, we can take 49 off the table, leaving 119.
How many of those hours do we spend even thinking about God? Maybe one or two on Sunday? That is if we go to church. But that still amounts to less than 2% of our waking hours. And what about the other 98%?
Now one could argue the time spent in church is not really for God but for us, so even though we may find ourselves thinking about God, we really aren't serving God.
No one really gives much thought to keeping the commandments. We just assume we do. (You might want to review them here. I just did.)
So, even our 2% commitment to God is not a full commitment to love and serve, the way God expects. And the other 98% may be more like coasting through, rather than being all in.
So, what should we do differently now, this Lent, when we are supposed to be looking closely at our selves and making changes?
What if each week we choose to devote 2 hours to doing what God asks of us, serving one God by helping one another? I guarantee that the love of God will shine in us if we do.
We cannot get closer to God than by doing what God wants of us, for we will feel the Holy Spirit moving us in ways we never expected.
So, thats my 2% Commitment, to give 2 hours a week to doing God's work, our work in God's name.
Look around. There are opportunities everywhere.
God is counting on you. And me.
More to come...
