Actions Matter

If all we do we do out of love, can we do wrong?
Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. - John 3:18-22
John reminds us that our actions and not our words reveal the truth about us.
If we truly love our neighbor as ourself, it shows in all we do, regardless of what we say.
One of the downsides of social media is it is mostly talk and little action. Sure, there are selfies showing us doing stuff, but how many people really care?
Mostly we tell the world how we feel about stuff, and they respond, sometimes with little hearts and sometimes with rants.
We have become a world of crosstalk, where conversation is reduced to voices crying out in the wilderness and trees falling in the forest.
No one hears. No one cares.
So, we have to get back to doing stuff, and we should do it together.
This week high school students will come and work with us at Caritas, helping feed the hungry. They will also work on a special project to see how we can work with the schools to teach students how to manage inventory and food distribution.
The idea is to get the community involved in the entire process of procuring and distributing food to those who cannot afford it.
We are not just talking about it. We are doing something together.
Yes, we could organize a rally or a march to send a message to our elected officials that they should do something, but it is so much more rewarding to just do the work ourselves.
We are optimistic. Community engagement is something we can all do, and when everyone does it, it costs a lot less than when we build a bureaucracy to organize it.
So, we will give it a try. Actions matter, and we are taking action.
It's all about love.
More to come...
