By Birth

Sometimes it matters where you come from.
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, asked, 'Our law does not judge people without first giving them a hearing to find out what they are doing, does it?' They replied, 'Surely you are not also from Galilee, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet is to arise from Galilee.' - John 7:50-52
In today's Gospel reading, John tells us that Nicodemus, who had visited Jesus by night, stands up for him when the Pharisees are looking to have him arrested.
Instead of listening to his plea to give Jesus a hearing, they taunt him, asking if he too has come from Galilee.
What I find fascinating about this Gospel is that John knew of the birth narrative in the other Gospels and chose not to include it in his. He didn't counter the argument of the Pharisees with talk of Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus.
Instead, he focuses on the testimony of one who met him and spoke to him, Nicodemus.
If a Pharisee could be convinced and choose to believe, couldn't anyone come to believe, regardless of what the ancient prophesies foretold?
But for many, getting a hearing is a matter of preference and privilege. Where you come from matters.
So, the lesson is clear. We should not judge people based on their background, place of origin or any other factor of birth, but by their words and actions.
If Jesus was from the City of David or from Nazareth, what difference does that make?
As he old his disciples, you believe because you see me, but how much greater is it for those who have not seen and believe?
More to come...
