Called to Work

When the going gets tough...
When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.
Is it fair that he would have to be called into service while partying at a wedding?
The Gospels are rife with stories of people crowding around Jesus to get him to help them with one problem or another. It's what we do, isn't it, when we find someone willing to be helpful?
We rely on them. A lot.
I don't think that was the plan when God decided to become man.
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus is called to work by his mom. Only Mom can get him to go against the plan and extend himself to help before he was ready to reveal his power.
We tend to believe that we are following God's will, that all that lies before us is His plan and though we have a free will, we are in some way pre-destined to make the decisions God has planned for us.
I wonder if that's the case.
God knows we have trouble following the path He has laid out for us, a path of truth and hope that leads to Him. But He lets us choose our own way, even if it leads to death and destruction.
How is that possible? How is that loving?
This is the mystery of our faith, the fact that the true nature and wisdom of God is elusive, even though He has made many attempts to show us and tell us what He sees for us.
So, the message today is fairly simple. Call on God and He will be there for you, whether He wills it or not.
How awesome is that?
Now let's not take advantage.
More to come...
