Child Vision

Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?
I never did and I am kind of sorry I didn't. Psychologists would tell you that imaginary friends are a phenomenon experienced predominantly by only children, and that would explain my failure to have one. I had a real friend, my sister.
But what if these "friends" are not imaginary at all?
At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. - Luke 10:21
I believe children are open to seeing and hearing things that lie beyond our reality. That's not to say they don't make things up. They have very active imaginations and can conjure up worlds in which to play and roam.
But they are also capable of tuning in to emotions, thoughts and energy fields that we adults have long since ignored or desensitized ourselves to.
So, when Jesus told his followers to come to him as a child, perhaps he was trying to reactivate in them what was given to them at birth, an ability to connect with a greater good a deeper purpose and meaning, God.
The gems that come from the mouths of babes are sometimes insights into the world we no longer see. We call it innocence, and we discount it in favor of wisdom, but listen to what Jesus said about that.
"I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants."
On this Mother's Day, as we recall the relationship we had with our moms from our childhood, perhaps we should try to reconnect to that innocence and not be too quick to play it forward. Perhaps we could share in the joyful memories of those moments of discovery when the world was new and the imaginings were real.
Maybe then we will be able to see things we had long since forgotten, and relive the love that caused our eyes to open wide with amazement at every new thing. Let us rediscover our Child Vision, and take a few moments to look at the world anew.
We might just discover a hidden calling to be one with God in a new way.
Happy Mother's Day.
More to come...
