Cloudy Eyes

How good are your eyes? Are they clear windows to your soul? Do they let in the light?
Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness. Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be as full of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays."- Luke 11:34-36
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus talks about healthy eyes. He tells his disciples that their eyes indicate how much light is in them.
It sounds like he is talking about how much light is able to get in rather than what we release from inside into the world.
If it is through our eyes that the light comes in, then it is also through our eyes that others can see what we are made of. Is our soul filled with light or darkness?
There are times, when I am talking with someone, that I find I look away from them. I find it hard to look them in the eyes for some reason. While I believe it is something about me, and not them, shyness, perhaps, or uneasiness. But it could also be something about them.
I know I get a sense of what people are feeling when I get close to them. We all do, I guess. If we pay close attention to our body energy, we can feel a difference when we are in the presence of something or someone positive.
So, what is it about the eyes that make me avert mine?
Maybe it is a lack of clarity, an inability to see the light within.
It is something to consider, isn't it? If we are all able to know the pain or trouble someone is going through simply by looking them in the eyes, what could we do with that gift?
Well, if we do what I have done, and just look away, we will do nothing with it. But if we take them by the hand and sit with them a while, we might be able to see the clouds roll away.
The message I get from Jesus is that the light needs to get in. We may not be able to clear away the cataracts on our own, but together, perhaps, we can.
And who knows, if I try to see through your eyes, mine may be made clearer as well.
So, if I fail to look you in the eye when we meet, say something. I may need your help to see clearly.
More to come...
