How Does Your Garden Grow?

Community Garden - St. John's Pleasantville, NY
What can you do on your own?
I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me. - John 5:30
I think there are two fallacies in life.
That we can do nothing on our own.
That we can do anything on our own.
Those who think they can accomplish nothing or very little on their own are wrong because so many have discovered it takes only one person to start something big.
I heard a story recently from a deacon friend of mine, about a thirteen year old boy who decided he would start a community garden to raise vegetables to feed the hungry. He raised money and worked a plot of land provided by his church and within a year, he expanded to several community gardens, each with a team of volunteers to help sow, tend, reap and distribute.
On the one hand, he did it on his own, but really, he was never alone.
God was with him, and the Spirit guided him to gain the support and help from many others.
When we think we can accomplish nothing, we do nothing. It is only when we set out to do something that we create the momentum that leads to change.
When Jesus said he could do nothing on his own, I believe he meant for us to take that to heart, not as an excuse to stand still, but as motivation to move.
What do you think? What can you do?
Whatever it is, rest assured that if it is His will, you will be able to do it.
More to come...
