Help Them

When your mom pushes you out in public, is it to embarrass you or something else?
Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and they remained there a few days. - John 2:2-12
Jesus wasn't ready to let anyone know what he had the power to do, but his mom could not let him stand by and not help the groom.
What we tend to overlook in this story is how Mom knew Jesus could help.
Did she just assume he could do something because of who she knew he was?
Maybe. But you discover your talents and abilities by doing, right? So Jesus must have been testing out his abilities at home.
Hey, Ma! Watch this!
I know it sounds silly and a bit sacrilegious, perhaps, but she must have known he could do something.
Do whatever he tells you could mean run out to the local wine merchant and get more wine. But I tend to doubt that is what she had in mind.
She expected him to do something others could not do. She knew who he was, and believed in him.
You could say that is what parents do, and you would be right. Parents are proud of their children and will not hesitate to push them out in public to show the world their value.
So, part of this is about helping the groom, but part is about pushing Jesus to start his ministry as well. Mom knew he would not be able to put off getting started once he showed his family and friends who he was.
So, parents, don't be afraid to embarrass your children.
More to come...
