Hospitality Rules

Life is not all about work.
Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:38-42
I don't think my grandmother ever enjoyed her company.
When we all went to visit, she would spend all of her time in the kitchen getting everything ready for the big meal we would share.
And even as we sat at table, she would be rushing back and forth to bring out something else or carry away the empty plates.
She was Martha.
On the other end of the spectrum was my aunt, who would spend most of her time chatting with her guests while trays of food lingered too long in the oven and salad fixings never made it to the table.
I guess she was more like Mary, enjoying the companionship of her friends and family while she had the chance, even if it meant dinner would be late.
There is a growing trend in restaurants today to focus more on hospitality. It has become a major component of the service.
Giving people an experience that isn't just about the food matters.
So, Jesus was onto something here.
And maybe our open concept living style these days points to our need to be in the same space as our guests while we prepare the meal, so we don't ignore them.
It is a good thing to be in conversation with one another. Maybe we should give it a try.
More to come...
