On the Waters

Frank and Carolyn with us
Today, we say farewell to a dear friend.
Send out your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will get it back. - Ecclesiastes 11:1
Two weeks ago my wife and I went to visit Carolyn and bring her the Eucharist. She was alert and full of smiles. She knew she was dying.
The next day, she was gone.
I remember sitting with Frank, her husband two years or so ago when Carolyn was seriously ill and we all thought her time had come. He was distraught. How would he live without her?
Well, shortly after Carolyn's health improved, Frank fell ill and within six months, he was gone. He didn't have to live without her.
I miss them both. They were a better couple than they were individually, and I pray that is how I am remembered, as part of a team with my wife, rather than alone.
In this journey, I have come to see, we devote way too much time reaching for things that don't last, when it is each moment that is truly precious.
What we cast upon the waters is what comes back, and what comes back to me from my dear friends is the love they had for each other and for all of their friends. We are blessed to have been counted among them.
The couple is back together.
More to come...
