Prodded On

Sometimes we are called to serve before we think we are ready.
And Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.' His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.' - John 2:4-5
In today's Gospel reading, John gives us a picture of Jesus just as he is starting his ministry.
He has selected his disciples and they are with him, but he has not yet begun showing the world what he could do. It is his mother who pushes him.
How often do we find ourselves in a similar situation, believing we are not ready, yet prodded on by someone close to us who has greater confidence in us than we do?
In showing us that even Jesus needed a push, John is telling us that we are not unique in our reluctance to act. We may not feel we are ready when it may be clear to those around us that we are.
Perhaps that is the true message here, that we all need a little push now and then to get going.
We need to be prodded on.
What does that imply for us today as we go out into the world? Are we ready to do the work God has called us to do, or are we waiting for someone to prod us on?
I think we all need a bit of prodding from time to time and God knows that, so he sends people into our lives to give us a push. So, let me prod you a bit.
As you venture out today to meet the world head on, be aware that there are people waiting for you to get started in our ministry of service to others. They will help you, but you need to take the first step.
So, go on. Get started. I know you can do it.
Do I need to get your mom to tell you?
More to come...
