Seeing the Light

What does it take for us to believe?
Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities. When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” - Matthew 11:1-6
You would think that John the Baptist would have been a believer from the start.
His father discovered that John was born for this, and John even said that his purpose was to make the path straight for the Messiah. John baptized Jesus and said it was Jesus who should be baptizing him.
So, why the sudden uncertainty?
Maybe it is to point out to all of us that it is ok to have doubts.
No matter what we see and hear, what we experience first hand in our lives, we can slip into uncertainty and doubt.
We can become confused and that's ok.
In fact, it is to be expected.
It is part of the process of moving from faith to belief.
We may have faith that Jesus is the one, and we may see proof through his actions, but until it sinks in and becomes real for us, we may not know.
We may be like John, doing our thing and believing that we are on the path. We may even be showing others the path we are taking, but until we see the light, we may not be fully committed.
The disciples had to go and tell John what they were still struggling with, that Jesus is the one.
So, maybe this is not about John at all, but about them, bout us.
What you have seen and heard is real.
Now, do you believe?
More to come...
