Shadow of a Doubt

How difficult is it to come to an agreement with someone?
Some agreements are simple. With little at stake or no differences of opinion, it is almost automatic. We are in synch. But when we have a lot to lose or gain, it is a different story. Agreements can be tough to come to.
Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." - Matthew 18:19-20
We probably don't think about God being in the game when we are negotiating for something we want from someone else.
Oh, we will barter with God directly, offering future behavior in exchange for immediate attention to our problems, but when we come together on important matters between us, even on matters involving the church, don't we tend to do so without considering God's position?
Jesus reminds us that when two or more are gathered in His name, He is there also, and we get that, most of the time. But what about when we come together in His name to argue or negotiate? Do we want to be reminded that He is present as well?
Perhaps if we did, the outcome would be achieved more quickly and with greater equity for all involved.
Wishful thinking?
Perhaps. But it might be worth giving it a try.
Recent discussions about the fate of an important project I have been involved in stalled because one or more participants forgot that God was present in the room.
That's a shame, since it is God's mission that was being discussed. Both argued God's case without stopping to listen for God's voice.
We can learn from that experience and make sure the next time we meet with anyone we acknowledge the one whose purpose we are trying to accomplish.
It is a simple lesson, really. Let all be brought into the light and find a way to agree.
But alas, we are human and our egos cast long shadows. We begin to doubt each other's honesty and integrity and so we fail to reach agreement.
So it must have been for the disciples. So, Jesus showed them all they need to do is agree on something and it will be done so.
Wow. Imagine what we could accomplish if we tried that!
More to come...
