Speaking Up

When the time comes that you get the audience you want with God, will you be ready?
And the LORD said to Job: "Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Anyone who argues with God must respond." Then Job answered the LORD: "See, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but will proceed no further." - Job 40:1-5
In today's reading, we get to the end of the story of Job, and he finally gets what he wants. He can hear directly from God. He states his case and God lets him have it, so he backs down.
I know someone who claims to have a long list of questions she has for God, but when she gets the chance, will she go at Him or stand in awe?
Job reminds us that we are really quite insignificant in the greater scheme of things. We cannot hold a candle to God, and it is important that we know that, even though God gives us greater importance than that.
God can be intimidating, as Job learns, but He is also giving Job a chance to speak his case. So, what is the lesson for us in this?
I think God wants us to be more than loyal and devoted subjects. Yes, He has unlimited power, and we should expect to quake in His presence, but He is also a loving father and creator, who will do anything for us.
We all have moments when we have problems with God, and we should feel we could bring our case to Him. If all we see is Job backing down, we might think we have no chance to have God hear us, but God challenges Job to speak up.
He wants Job to state his case with conviction.
If we set out to argue with God, we must be prepared to respond to God's questions. It is only fair, right?
Most of us would probably back off and not challenge God, knowing God has all the answers. But the story of Job, troubling as it may be, opens the door for us to do just that.
We can ask God why. And God may ask us a question or two in return, so we must be ready to answer Him.
So, speak up. And be ready. God is waiting.
More to come...
