Understanding the Trinity

Some messages are familiar. We take comfort in them when we hear them. Even though we may only hear them when times are tough.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over.Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. - Psalm 23:1-6
The 23rd Psalm is one of those comforting messages. Because it mentions death and living forever, it is frequently heard at funerals. But it is a message for all the days of our life, not just for the end.
The image of God in this prayer is very personal. He is both Lord and shepherd. He is with us in our daily walk, even though we revere and worship Him. It is God with us, Immanuel.
As Christians, we are comforted every day, knowing God is always with us. We are guided by the Spirit and we walk through the dangers and trials of this life with Jesus beside us.
It should be easy for us to talk about God this way, to share with others what we believe. It is all right here in this psalm that many already know.
So ,here is a challenge. The next time you find yourself troubled by the difficulties of speaking about God in three persons, think of this psalm and look for the presence of each.
See if you can take comfort in the God who provides for us, the God who walks with us, the God who anoints us, and calls us home.
Those who see all three as one God come that much closer to understanding our faith.
Let us pray.
More to come...
