Uniqueness

If you could change anything about you, what would it be?
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. - Romans 12:1-8
Paul tells us we should be happy with who we are and what we were given.
Whether we like it or not, we are all different. You think that would make us happy. Who wants to be exactly like someone else?
Even those who are born identical have differences, and even they may find themselves envious of one another for what they see are differences.
The message here is that God gave each of us something different and unique, something that makes us who we are, unlike anyone else. And that is what we should treasure and learn to use.
We tend to focus on the one thing, or two, that we wish we could change, rather than seeing those things as gifts that help us stand out. What is it that we have that we wouldn't give up? What is it we would become if we gave up what we thought we didn't want or need?
The challenge before us is to discover ourselves. We have a gift that is precious. It is the key to who we truly are, but we may never discover it if we spend all out time focusing on what we don't like about ourselves.
So, today, let us go in search of God's special gift given only to us.
And then let us celebrate our uniqueness.
More to come...
