Working for God

Today is the Feast of Michael and all Angels, the day when we celebrate the charge given to the angels to watch over us.
But to which of the angels has he ever said, 'Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet'? Are not all angels spirits in the divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? - Hebrews 1:13-14
Are the angels like God's special employees, given the job of taking care of His people?
Angels are mentioned throughout the Bible as spirits created before the earth and humans, and in the Book of Job we learn that the angels shouted in applause at the creation.
I will admit that I never gave much thought to angels, and I don't think I have ever seen one, though how would I know for sure?
The idea of being one of God's angels is pretty cool, though. If we could come back as angels, that might be a good way to spend eternity, working for God.
But would I want people to know I was there helping them?
One of the advantages of being human and working in God's service, is that people get to know you and you get to know them. We are not invisible helpers and assistants.
If we are going to do God's work, don't we want others to know about it?
I guess what sets angels apart from us is that they have no egos. They don't need to have their deeds acknowledged and rewarded. They can just do what they do without letting anyone know about it.
Oh, but wait a minute. If that is true, how do we explain Lucifer, the angel who battled God for greater power?
So, if angels do have egos and can be motivated by them, then the fact that most of the angels continue to serve us for God is kind of amazing. Perhaps we should take the time today to acknowledge them, even if we cannot see them.
So, let us all tip our hats to the angels and let them take a bow. Where would we be without them?
More to come...
